Cambridge University
Hillwalking Club

A club which travels to mountainous regions of the UK for hillwalking at all levels of ability. We run day trips, weekends away and longer holiday trips to areas such as the Lake District, Snowdonia, the Brecon Beacons, and Scotland. We welcome residents of Cambridge, and staff and students of both universities.

Out-of-term events
Lunches do not take place out of term, but pub meets usually continue on Thursdays throughout the vacation. Sometimes we move from our regular haunt of The Castle Inn or meet up earlier in order to have a meal too. The details each week are finalised on the Discuss List but I'll also try to place a note here each week with details of the next pub meet (though note that we often don't decide the details until quite late; often on the Thurday itself).

This week (15/04/2010): The Punter, 7:30pm for food.

Forthcoming trips

All trips: Trips are open to Club members (sometimes non-members are accepted at the committee's discretion). You will need normal hillwalking equipment (see the Club's Mountain Safety Guidelines); the committee can - and will - refuse to take people on walks whom they feel are inadequately equipped. The club does have some gear for loan - ask the Equipment officer.

Unless otherwise stated, weekend trips leave from Cambridge on Friday afternoons (usually around 5:30pm); day trips early in the morning (around 7am). Longer (vacation) trips generally require members to make their own transport arrangements, arriving on the evening of the first day.

See here for information about how to sign up for trips, and look out for messages on the email list for trip announcements.

Maps specified are Ordnance Survey Landranger (1:50 000) and Explorer (1:25 000) series; Harvey maps are also available for some areas at 1:40 000 or 1:25 000 scale.

Weekend 8 and 9 May 2010
A trip to the Tan y Wyddfa cottage in Ryd Dhu in Snowdonia. We haven't visited this cosy little place for a few years, but it's well located for some slightly different ascents up Snowdon and other hills.
Weekend 5 and 6 June 2010
We end the academic year with a weekend trip to the George Starkey Hut in Patterdale in the Lakes. There is camping nearby and some of those who have finished exams are likely to extend their stay into the following week.

Regular socials

Lunches
Lunches during term are on Monday lunchtimes at 1:15pm and cost £2. They are in Murray Edwards JCR in Pearl House on the main Muray Edwards (formerly New Hall) College Site [PDF College Map]. It's on the first floor. Come along to socialise with fellow hillwalkers and have all the baguettes, fillings, crisps, fruit, chocolate and treats that you can eat!
Pub Meets
Pub meets are on Thursday evenings from 9:30pm, in the Castle Inn, on Castle Hill. Upstairs if possible (or outside if it's nice), but occasionally downstairs. All year round (not just term-time). The Castle has an entry in the Cambridge Pub Guide; if you need directions, a map can be obtained from Multimap.

Recent trips

March 2010
The final trip of Lent term was a brilliantly sunny Sunday in the Malvern Hills, the club's first ever visit there. Over the Easter vacation we returned to Snowdonia, staying at Bryn Brethynau near Capel Curig.
February 2010
February continued this year's wintry theme, with snow on the ground for both weekend trips. Despite this, our visit to Selside in Ribblesdale, Yorkshire saw several groups successfully complete the Three Peaks Challenge (Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough in a day). Towards the end of term, we enjoyed a weekend of fantastic winter conditions in Eskdale in the western Lake District.
January 2010
The Christmas vacation trip was again to Seathwaite at the head of Borrowdale in the Lake District. The first weekend trip of the new term visited the cosy Pinacle Club hut in Cwm Dyli at the foot of Snowdon.
