About the trip

For our Easter Holiday Trip (24-29th Mar),  we are returning to Glencoe, located near Fort William and Ben Nevis. It is one of the most iconic places in Scotland, featuring in films such as Harry Potter and James Bond Skyfall.

Please note that by signing up here you agree to pay the £50 non-refundable deposit upon successful ballot allocation, this will deducted from your final trip costs. Membership is required as usual, this annual fee is £20 and covers your BMC membership (which includes insurance).

Please note...
This trip is the most advanced and physically intensive the Club runs each year. It is expected that you will walk on average 20km per day, for four days, on steep and snowy terrain. You will be asked to provide some information on your skills at the bottom.

It is not expected that we shall be returning to Cambridge any earlier than the evening of the 29th. To be respectful to the drivers, please ensure you are available for the full six days.

Rough estimation of trip costs
1) Accommodation (5 nights): £103
If you have not done so already, you have to pay £20 annual membership fee

2) For your safety you must have each of the following items. Bicycle helmets are not suitable replacements for mountaineering helmets. Boots must be B rated (i.e. crampon-compatible). The club will arrange rental of this gear for those who don't have their own - please find the rental prices below.
  • Winter Boots (B1, B2, or B3) [ £24 ]
  • Crampons (C1, C2, or C3) [ £18 ]
  • Ice Axe [ £18 ]
  • Mountaineering Helmet [ £7.50 ]
  • All items  [ £71 ]
3) For those who have never used crampons or ice axes or who would like some guidance in dealing with winter conditions, we are running a two-day Winter Skills course with qualified instructors. This course will be subsidised by the Andy Gibson Training Fund, and should cost £54 per person for both days, which is excellent value (you'd pay £255 at Glenmore Lodge). Provided we get the proper winter conditions, the course will cover basic movement on hard snow, avalanche assessment and ice axe arrest.

*** For your safety, you must attend the course if you have not used crampons or ice axes before. Those who are not attending the course will be asked to provide evidence to show that you are capable in dealing with winter conditions.

4) The Club will arrange for transport, but costs for both petrol and food is not included.
Whilst not paid to the Club, petrol for your driver is estimated at £40. Food can be bought on the trip, with a Co-op is 10 mins down the road. We recommend organising your food together in your car group.

Dropping Out
If you have been allocated a place but can no longer make the trip, you must let us know as soon as possible so that we can try to find someone else to take the place. While we appreciate that circumstances can change, drop-outs cause considerable trouble to the committee. Consequently, anyone dropping out may be penalised with a reduced chance of getting a place on the next trip they apply for. The same procedure will apply in the case of non-payment.

If you are dropping out before ballot allocation, please notify our President and Secretary if you can no longer make the trip before the ballot closes at 4pm on the 25th Jan at cuhwcpresident@gmail.com and cuhwcsecretary@gmail.com. If this is past the deadline and you are selected upon successful ballot allocation, you are required to pay the non-refundable deposit. If we are unable to find anyone (more likely the later you let us know) you will remain liable for the full trip cost.
