My stay at Swarthghyll Farm
By Jamie Bellenger for Yorkshire Dales, Oct 2024
In short, Swarthghyll Farm is a great bunkhouse with good walks within driving, but limited walks starting in the bunkhouse.
Parking is right outside, with a 2mile rough road leading to the farm. You won't have radio/mobile data near the bunkhouse, but it has wifi once there.
Views outside are good, although they can be misty.
Sleeping is bunkbeds in dorms of 6-8, nothing noteworthy good or bad.
Kitchen is well equipped, had enough space for 4 groups before "excuse me" is said a lot, and has a big oven, 6 hobs, microwave, toaster, kettles, and 2x big sinks.
Eating was 6x tables of 6 chairs and a big crampt, so don't expect everyone to eat simultaneously. Fortunately living room overflow is fine.
Speaking of, living room has many large sofas, tables, and places to chill. There is also a dedicated games room, with foosball, pool, and table tennis tables. Spacious, lots of space to relax, and usable wifi, good stuff there.
Dryroom was large but didn't feel warm. No complaints of "this isn't dry", just mumbles of "bit damp but oh well".
Cleaning equipment was fine, we got a vacumn cleaner so that's nice
Toilets were fine. 2x gendered rooms, with F having 3x loos, 3x Sinks/mirrors, 2x showers, decent water pressure, annoying shower button that doesn't stay on long enough, and slightly wonky shower drainage. Overall good
Walking distance is one complaint. The bunkhouse is on the Dales route, but you will be walking 4km E or W at the start of any route starting at the bunkhouse. This is almost 2h of lost walking time, unless you drive somewhere. Fortunately there are a lot of good walks (peaks, waterfalls, moors, etc.) within medium driving distance, and pubs/ice cream/cheese factories galore to finish your route.
Overall, it's a good bunk house I'd visit again, but I would plan your route in advance when visiting. If you don't, you have to either do a short route, or drive to start.
