Cambridge University
Hillwalking Club

A club which travels to mountainous regions of the UK for hillwalking at all levels of ability. We run day trips, weekends away and longer holiday trips to areas such as the Lake District, Snowdonia, the Brecon Beacons, and Scotland. We welcome residents of Cambridge, and staff and students of both universities.

Forthcoming trips

All trips: Trips are open to Club members (sometimes non-members are accepted at the committee's discretion). You will need normal hillwalking equipment (see the Club's Mountain Safety Guidelines); the committee can - and will - refuse to take people on walks whom they feel are inadequately equipped. The club does have some gear for loan - ask the Equipment officer.

Unless otherwise stated, weekend trips leave from Cambridge on Friday afternoons (usually around 5 or 6 o'clock); day trips very early in the morning (6 or 7 o'clock). Longer (vacation) trips generally require members to make their own transport arrangements, arriving on the evening of the first day.

Booking details are given on the email list; this normally involves a sign-up on the Monday morning immediately preceding the trip. You must sign the booking sheet to secure a place, unless you've been exempted by prior arrangement!

Maps specified are Ordnance Survey Landranger (1:50 000) and Explorer (1:25 000) series; Harvey maps are also available for some areas at 1:40 000 or 1:25 000 scale.

Sunday 19 October 2008
Edale in the Peak District of England. The traditional day trip to the Peak District for new members (and old!). Sign up at the Squash; after that, remaining places may be bagged by email.
We've previously visited this area in October 2005 and October 2006. The popular walks include Kinder Scout, the Edale skyline, and various tea-shops & pubs.
Useful maps: Explorer OL1 (The Peak District - Dark Peak area) or Landranger 110 (Sheffield & Huddersfield area).
Weekend 1 and 2 November 2008
Caseg Fraith bunkhouse, near Capel Curig in Snowdonia. There's easy access to all the high peaks of the area including Tryfan/Glyderau, the Carneddau, Moel Siabod, and Snowdon itself. It's a long way from the pub, so worth bringing our own for a cosy social in the bunkhouse.
We've previously visited this bunkhouse in November 2004 and October 2005.
Appropriate maps are Landranger 115 (Snowdon) and Explorer OL17 (Snowdonia - Snowdon and Conwy Valley areas).

Other events

Tuesday 7 to Wednesday 8 October 2008
We'll have a stall at the Societies' Fair in Kelsey Kerridge Sports Hall. Come and find out about the Club!
Saturday 11 October 2008
(date to be confirmed)
The Squash. This is your chance to join, or to encourage others to join! There will be a slide-show there, so you can find out more about us, with refreshments being served after the presentation. You can also book yourself onto on the first trip of term (to Edale), or just admire the nice pictures of mountains.

Regular socials

Lunches
Lunches during term are on Wednesday lunchtimes at 1:15pm and cost £1.50. They are in Fawcett JCR in Newnham College; please email Katrina for detailed directions - or ask at one of the pub meets.
Pub Meets
Pub meets are on Thursday evenings from 9:30pm, in the Castle Inn, on Castle Hill. Upstairs if possible (or outside if it's nice), but occasionally downstairs. All year round (not just term-time). The Castle has an entry in the Cambridge Pub Guide; if you need directions, a map can be obtained from Multimap.

Recent trips

June 2008
We visited the Three Peaks area of the Yorkshire Dales on a joint trip with Oxford; we enjoyed beautiful weather and a luxurious bunkhouse. In the middle of the month, the annual Garden Party had mixed weather. Term closed with the annual Scotland summer trip, this time to Glen Shiel.
May 2008
Term began with a trip to Stair, in the Newlands valley in the northern Lake District; a day trip to Dovedale in the White Peak followed.
March 2008
The planned trip to Eskdale was changed to Loweswater, where we stayed for the first time. Despite high winds on the Saturday, a good time was had by all. The Easter trip was at the end of March, to Snowdonia.
